Lamps - 21/365
Wednesday, March 31, 2010 at 10:22PM by static416I don't know how this place stays in business. It's a lighting store at the corner of Mill St and Parliament. I have yet to see a single customer inside the store. In fact, I don't think I've ever even seen an employee inside the store.
The Distillery District as a whole has this problem that it's a little too pretentious for it's own good some of the time. There are not enough rich people in the area to buy the amount of fancy cheese, expensive sandwiches, and boutique groceries to necessary keep most of these places in business. The grocery store has basically stopped selling groceries, and seems to just stock it's shelves with orders from Grocery Gateway, marked up 20%.
There are exceptions. Soma, the chocolate store, is always packed. Mill St Brewery is frequently linded up out the door, and Engine Gallery seems to do well. But I think it'll be awhile before there is a sufficiently affluent customer base in the immediate area to keep some of the more expensive niche businesses afloat.
