Mac Apps I Use Constantly
Tuesday, March 23, 2010 at 9:23PM Here are some of the Mac applications I use all the time. Please jump in with suggestions, I'm always looking for alternatives.
Insomnia
Free
By far the most used Mac application I have. It allows you to have your Macbook continue to run as normal while closed. Great letting your computer run while downloading all those Linux ISOs. I don't know why this isn't built into the OS, it's obvious.
Transmission, Automatic, ShowRSS, and ReactorFeed
1, 2, 3, 4 - Free
This four-way combo is my PVR. Together they allow you to automatically download anything you want without you having to do anything.
1.a) Pick the Linux ISO TV shows you want on the ShowRSS site and it gives you an RSS feed.
b) ReactorFeed creates an RSS feed that you can update remotely from their site with any torrents (download that Linux ISO at home while at a party).
2. Add the RSS feeds to Automatic and it downloads the torrent files to a local folder.
3. Then have Transmission auto-add torrents from that folder.
4. Everything downloaded automatically.
Pollux
$10 per year
For $10 a year this program goes through your iTunes and ID's the selected songs based on the music itself. It then fixes artist, album, year, and the album art.
Hazel
$21 - Think I found a promo code somewhere
Mac file automation to keep me organized. Totally worth the money. I have it move all my different TV shows to individual folders on my NAS, delete old torrent files, move downloaded movies to the NAS, and flag files in my download folder that are more than a week old, all automatically.
JungleDisk
$3 per month + usage over 5GB
I have lost all of my photography three times since first year university. Never again. This is the automated online backup solution for my photos. Getting up to $17 a month now that I have 120GB of photos in the cloud. But it's better than other services because:
- it doesn't throttle your uploads (Carbonite did)
- uses Amazon S3
- works on Windows, Mac, and Linux (Carbonite doesn't support Linux)
- also includes folder syncing across multiple computers (work, parents, home)
GoodSync
$29 - Think I found a promo code somewhere
Allows you to sync only the differences between folders. I use it for automatically backing up my computer to my NAS.
WriteRoom
$25
Great for focusing on writing. A simple text file editor with spellcheck that blacks out the rest of your screen to block distractions.
Jaadu VNC Connect
$25 - iPhone App
Access your Mac remotely using this iPhone app.
Adium
Free
The standard IM client.
EchoFon
Free
Better than Twittie, smaller than TweetDeck. Syncs with my iPhone.
