Online Comics to Read
Tuesday, April 22, 2008 at 11:08AM
I've found quite a few cool online comics recently, mostly through the internet-equivalent of channel surfing, StumbleUpon. These are the ones that have become part of my daily routine:

Updated Tuesdays and Thursdays, it is a sort of mildly abstract humor. My kinda stuff. Just found this one the other day.

Usually updated every day. Consistently ok to very good. You won't be disappointed.

These ones are a little odd. They are frequently either not funny, or actively confusing. But the weird thing is, I can't stop reading them, I still check them every day.

XKCD is "A webcomic of romance, sarcasm, math, and language." and is updated Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Just about every single one of these is uploaded to Digg, they are extremely popular, and rightfully so. They are consistently funny in a nerdy sort of way, though sometimes even too nerdy for me (I know its hard to imagine).

I found out about this comic after Scott Adams (of Dilbert fame) featured it on his blog. When I first heard found these they were pretty funny, but have dropped off slightly in quality over the last little while. I suppose it's difficult to consistently come up with funny "instructions" for mundane tasks twice a week. I mean I only come up with a post every week or so, and even that is usually either weak sauce, lifted material, or both in this case.

More nerdy, geeky humor. Consistently entertaining, if not hilarious, as shown above. Updates frequently and usually has minor storylines which will run for a few weeks at a time.

The above is kind of a bad example, in that it's pretty funny, and also not very nerdy. Generally Penny Arcade is like Ctrl-Alt-Del, but with shorter storylines (if any), and deeper into nerd culture. Video games would be the most common and least nerdy content, with comics occasionally featuring nerdom on the order of DnD or Magic: The Gathering. Though I suppose that's also the case for almost all of the other geek-omics I showed earlier.

These update every day and are more of a running story. They are also the least nerdy of the bunch, being almost a sort of sitcom in comic form.

To be honest I almost never read these, so I can't comment on the frequency or storylines. I check these out entirely for the artwork, which is always impressive.
