Photos of the Week
Friday, October 31, 2008 at 10:51AM
Of course in the fraction of a second that I take a photo, my dad decides to look somewhat solemn as he blows out the candles on his 70th birthday. At least he's not blinking.

That was the only decent photo to come out of that evening. Though to tell you the truth, I spent a lot more time eating and drinking than operating my camera.
As you may have noticed, I've dropped the week numbering. That is because it's kind of pointless now, being that I've missed a fair number of them. I haven't posting photos as frequently because I thought that most people who read this also check my Flickr, making a photos of the week post somewhat redundant. However, I've decided that this is an easy post, so what the hell.
A couple weeks back I took some shots of my kitty, having not done so since shortly after I got her.

She's super-cute, but as you can see, she's a little obsessed with biting hands. I've been trying to ween her off of that by spraying her with a water bottle, but it's only succeeded in making her afraid of the water bottle. She still stalks my hands.
It's particularly surprising when a furry bundle of teeth and claws attaches itself to your hand while you're asleep. Now I have to sleep with both of my hands hidden under the covers.

Last weekend I went for another photography walk-about in a slightly new area, electing to go north and slightly west, rather than north-east as usual. I'm always surprised by how much you notice when walking around on foot as opposed to driving by in a car, it's like a completely different neighborhood.

While most of the 150 shots didn't turn out great, there were some that I'm thinking of printing. This one came out well considering I just stuck the camera through a random hole in some plywood and took a picture.

The next one I almost didn't even post to Flickr, as I wasn't completely happy with it. However everyone else seems to like it, it's received a good number of views, favorites, and comments (compared to my other stuff anyways).
The sun really looked awesome coming through the buildings that afternoon, and traffic was light enough to allow me to shoot from the middle of the street. Unfortunately it wasn't quite light enough for me to stand there for any length of time. I would have preferred to close up the aperture a bit and get a better depth of field, but I couldn't exactly set up a tripod in the middle of King St.

I kind of like the hazy blue glow that I got shooting through the glass at the Porsche dealership. It gives the photo a bit of a dream-like quality. I'm actually surprised how sharp it came out, I must have been doing something right.

Finally, this is the one I'm most proud of. It's a shot off my balcony and probably one of my all-time favorites. The clouds, the grass, the lit up buildings, it all came out well.
I owe a lot of that to the weather. The clouds kept the sunlight, and by extension, the dynamic range, to a reasonable level. That's why it looks almost like an artificial HDR shot because the brightest portions of the shot are dim enough not to cause the darker areas to be underexposed.

As all photographers know, moderately cloudy days are great for photography.

Fabulous. Big, dark, ominous skies are my absolute favourite. I tend to sub consciously bracket a few under exposed frames for every landscape type shot I take. You have a real eye. Why aren't you pursuing THAT in school?
Stay on top of that jerky cat. I didn't with my cat, dirtbike, and now he bites not only me, but everyone else too. I have to quarantine the little jerk everytime someone comes over and it's embarrassing. He bites my feet while I sleep as opposed to my hands, so I have to keep those under cover... and my foot is my THERMOSTAT while I sleep, so it's miserable...
Maybe I WILL take that in school! A couple classes anyways. I can't afford to be a real photographer. I'm tempted to sell my car for some L glass and a Canon 5D Mark II.. but that would be stupid, I need the car for work. Maybe I'll just sell a kidney.
And yeah the cat thing is a matter of discipline on my part. I also should get her some real toys. All she has is a little stuffed squirrel and some balls of paper.
That's still a very good photo of your Dad in candlelight. I have a sister who seems to know how to time her blinks when I am taking her picture. 8 out of 10 will have her eyes closed.
The rest are great. I like the alley and the last one the best. Very well done.
All great photos!! You have a good eye - much better than mine.
Actually, I like your POW because I find I enjoy the extended commentary you do on them compared to your comments on Flickr/Facebook.
Very nice. :)
I found your blog through Flickr, really good Photostream and a nice blog to go with!
Cheers.
Thanks Raymond! It's great to get some positive feedback.
